The Leadership Audit: Are You Building a Business You Actually Want to Run?

by Jun 6, 2025Business Strategy, Thought Leadership & Mindset

Most business owners don’t pause long enough to ask one of the most important questions in entrepreneurship:

“Do I actually want to run the business I’ve built?”

It’s easy to miss the signs when you’re the one keeping it all afloat. If your calendar is full and revenue is flowing, then it looks like things are working.

But under the surface? You might be:

  • Consistently overwhelmed.
  • Dreading meetings with your own team members.
  • Working without days off or clear direction.
  • Barely paying yourself for the effort you’re putting in.

This is where a leadership audit for business owners comes in.

Whether you’re scaling, sustaining, or shifting, a regular check-in with your vision, leadership habits, and personal wellbeing is one of the most powerful things you can do to avoid burnout, reclaim clarity, and find business success.

This audit is part wake-up call, part mirror.

Even more, it is fully about empowering you to build the business you actually want to run.

Are You Leading Your Business or Is It Leading You?

Here are a few common signs your business may be out of alignment.

Be honest with yourself.

→ You start Monday already exhausted.

→ Your team looks busy but you’re not sure they’re moving the right things forward and you’re unsure how to address it.

→ No one really knows what your top priorities are, including you.

→ You’ve outsourced work but not outcomes.

→ You haven’t taken a restorative break in months.

→ You keep “fixing” problems but never feel ahead.

→ You’re underpaid (or not paid at all).

These are all symptoms of a business running on default instead of design.

They’re not proof of failure. Instead, they are signs of drift.

Drift is when your business slowly shifts away from your original vision or values without you realizing it until things no longer feel aligned, but you can’t quite name why.

Drift is an accidental leadership style that can be corrected when you know what to look for.

What a Business You Do Want to Run Looks Like

Here’s what intentional leadership often looks like in businesses that feel aligned:

→ You’re excited about your work and your weeks don’t blur together.

→ Your team knows what success looks like at least 90% of the time and are consistently innovative to achieve results.

→ You can delegate without micromanaging, stepping in, or rewriting everything.

→ Camaraderie, creativity, and curiosity are part of the team culture.

→ You’re paying yourself regularly (even if it’s not 100% of your goal… yet).

→ You’ve designed a rhythm of rest that actually works for your life.

→ You can name your top three business goals without opening your project board with some key performance indicators (KPIs) AND they have a timeline for implementation.

In short: you’re both productive and you’re leading the business. Not just working inside of it.

But how do you know where you stand right now?
That’s where this leadership audit comes in.

Navigate the Leadership Audit for Business Owners

This simple audit is broken into three sections based on my 3Ps + You Framework. In this audit, we’ll be focusing on the “+ You” part of the framework, which supports business owners in aligning their mindset, self-care, and leadership.

You’ll reflect on where you are — and where you want to be.

For each question below, rate yourself on a scale of 1–5, where:

  • 1 = Not at all true

  • 3 = Sometimes true

  • 5 = Always true

Anywhere you score below a 3?
That’s an opportunity!

Mindset: How Are You Thinking About Your Business?

  • I believe my business is still aligned with my long-term goals.
  • I trust myself to make smart, timely decisions.
  • When challenges come up, I don’t internalize them as personal failure.
  • I regularly revisit and refine the vision I’m working toward.

I’m more proactive than reactive in how I approach growth.

If your mindset feels like it’s constantly in fight-or-flight mode, your decisions will follow. Strong leadership starts with clear thinking.

How many questions did you score 3 or less?

Self: How Are You Really Doing?

  • I have built rest or non-working time into my schedule.
  • I have consistent practices that help me stay grounded and whole
  • I’m not the last person on my priority list
  • I know what it looks like to take care of myself in this season.
  • I can step away from my business without everything falling apart.

Self-leadership for entrepreneurs isn’t about bubble baths. It’s about sustainability. You can’t scale if you’re always in survival mode.

Leadership: How Are You Guiding Others?

  • My team knows what’s expected of them most of the time.
  • I’ve communicated what success looks like in their roles.
  • I have the right people in the right roles or I’m actively adjusting to find the right fit.
  • My team meetings are productive and strategic.
  • I lead with outcomes in mind, not just tasks.

When leadership is fuzzy, everything else gets murky. Clear, confident direction reduces friction for you and your team.

How to Use Your Audit Results

This leadership audit isn’t about being perfect. Instead, you should be honest.

Here’s how to make it actionable:

  1. Identify your lowest-scoring area.
Is it mindset, self, or leadership? That’s your first focus point.

  2. Choose one small shift to make this week.
For example: block one no-meeting day, rewrite a team member’s deliverables, or set a 30-minute CEO check-in on your calendar.

  3. Revisit this audit monthly until you feel like it is under control then switch to quarterly.
Businesses change. So do seasons of life. Make this a habit and not a one-off.

  4. Get support where you need it.
If you can’t see the way forward, that’s not failure. That’s feedback. Find an advisor, coach, or operational partner to help guide the next step. I would love to be considered – book a call with me when you’re ready.

You Deserve a Business That Serves You Too

The most powerful shift a business owner can make isn’t to hire, launch, or scale. Instead, it is to ask themselves:

“Is this working for me, or just working?”

You don’t have to wait until you crash to course-correct.

If this audit revealed a few pain points you’re ready to fix and you’re not sure how, I can help.

Book a Business Strategy Assessment to get clear on what’s working, what’s not, and how to move forward with purpose.

Leadership isn’t just about vision. It’s about building something you actually want to wake up and lead.
